Guinea Pigs comes in different colors, long hair or short hair and they love to hide. The average adult can weigh up to 3 pounds and with excellent care live between 4-7 years. Guinea Pigs are very quite pets, but when scared, threatened or nervous they will hide in a safe place such as a box or a hut. Guinea Pigs never try to bite their owners unless they are being mistreated, taste food on the person handling them or feel threaten in any type of way. Their teeth are constantly growing and they will need to spend lots of time chewing on things such as wood or chew toys to keep the teeth worn down. If the teeth should happen to become over grown, you will need to have a Vet to trim them. If left unattended, the Guinea Pig will not be able to eat and will slowly starve to death! To purchase one or more Guinea Pigs, it is best to buy 2 if you can, so the Guinea Pig will not become bored and lonely. If you plan on playing with your Guinea Pig daily, then you are ok with one! Housing The Guinea Pig will need a cage about 28 long x 14 wide x 14 tall or larger for 2 or more. Please provide a box, or igloo for the Guinea Pig to hide in. Do not place cage in areas that are too hot or cold such as door ways or windows. Make sure that you carry the cage by the bottom and not the sides. Diet Pellets made for Guinea Pigs are the only type of pellets Guinea Pigs should eat. (A food that has lots of dried fruit, vegges, and seeds is ideal if you can find it.) They have the correct amount of protein, vitamin C and fiber in the pellets. You should never feed your Guinea Pig rabbit pellets/food, because the rabbit food contains different amounts of protein and other items in it that may end up harming your Guinea Pig. Timothy or Alfalfa Hay should be provided for and fed to the Guinea Pig and they can have as much as the Guinea Pig can eat. It is very good for them! The hay will help to trim down their teeth! Never Feed your Guinea Pig seed diet! The seeds are too oily and rich and the husk will get stuck in their teeth. This could lead to early death! You can supplement the pellet diet with fresh fruits and veggies such as: Carrot Kale Orange Apple Celery Turnip Cucumber Cauliflower Brussels Sprouts Corn Spinach Tomato Peas Melon Grapes Bell Pepper Pear Cabbage Romaine Lettuce Plum Parsley **Never feed your Guinea Pig Iceberg Lettuce this will cause severe diarrhea!** You can also feed them pesticide free grass, dandelion, and clovers. Please remember to limit greens and fruits because too much can cause diarrhea and will make your Guinea Pig sick. Best to give in small amounts - usually a handful daily for each Guinea Pig. You do not need to add Vitamin C drops in their water. This will make their water taste funny and they will drink less. Water is very important to an Guinea Pig! If you buy the proper Pellet Diet (Stay away from low end cheap Discount Store foods - does not contain the correct protein and vitamins that your pet will need to survive) and give fresh foods daily then your Guinea Pig will be receiving the proper nutrient and no addition supplements need to be purchased for it. Needs Guinea Pigs need physical attention and caring for daily. They will need several hours each day to sleep with out being interrupted. Make sure that your provide them with fresh food and water every day! If you take your Guinea Pig outside, please watch out for dangers such as Dogs, Cats, Hawks, over exposure to either Extreme Heat or Cold weather! Guinea Pigs can not take heat over 80 degrees. Bedding, the best bedding for them is a sythentic bedding (like Carefresh, or similar), Aspen Bedding or Pine Shavings (make sure that the pine shavings has been sitting out in the open for a while to air out!) NEVER USE CEDAR SHAVINGS - THIS WILL KILL YOUR GUINEA PIG!!!! Cedar releases an aromatic oils that will damage their lungs. This will lead to lung infections, hair loss, loss of appetite and death!
