Description

Thoroughbred - Extra Large - Young - Male - Horse - Andy
Description
Sadly, Andy's recent adoption just did not work out., through absolutely no fault of his own. PLEASE before you consider adopting a horse, realize they require a significant commitment of time, love, and money. Andy would be great as a companion horse and is sound for light riding - his previously bobowed tendon means he will never be an eventer and could not be ridden for long periods daily, but he is sound and healthy for occasional jaunts/trail rides. PLEASE READ THIS: Several people have offered to adopt Andy for their children. Andy is NOT APPROPRIATE FOR A CHILD and will NOT be adopted for a child. Please, trust our judgment. He is a GREAT horse, but he is an OFF THE TRACK THOROUGHBRED and needs several years of training and patience before a child/beginner should attempt to ride him. Andy is a 7 year old 16.2 dark bay off the track thoroughbred gelding. He bowed a tendon while training for his first race at Keeneland, and was permanently retired from racing. Andy was in professional (non-racing) training for about 10 months and progressed quite nicely. Andy is sound for dressage, trail riding, and possibly light jumping, but will never be an A level eventer. He is big and flashy, BUT he will only be adopted for LIGHT riding. Adoption contract wil require he NOT be resold, he can only come back to the rescue for re-placement. His adoption fee will help offset SOME of the cost of his training and board. Andy is a light stall cribber. He prefers 24 hour a day turnout. When turned out on the company of another horse, he rarely if ever cribs. He is a fairly easy keeper; twice a day feedings with a quality feed as well as free choice hay will be a requirement of his adoption. Andy loads, ties, bathes, and stand for the farrier. He travels well in a trailer but prefers a "box stall" type trailer or an open livestock trailer. He's just too big for a standard 2 horse side-by-side or standard slant-load. Andy prefers the company of another horse - he isn't picky, and is fairly low in the pecking order. Horses are companion animals, so we will REQUIRE Andy's adopters have at least one other horse in the pasture with him (NOT A STALLION!). Access to a barn or run-in shed required. Other horses on the property must be up to date on all vaccinations including strangles, EPM, West Nile, Rabies, and 5 way. Annual coggins required. Regular deworming schedule also required. Please keep in mind - Andy is a young, BIG thoroughbred. He is a GREAT horse, but he has a LOT of energy and is VERY strong. Adopters must be 21 years of age or over and MUST have significant horse experience. We prefer his adopter be currently working with a trainer who can help bring Andy along. He requires someone who can spend ALOT of time riding him and gaining his trust and respect. Only advanced riders considered. Potential adopters must own property - we don't want Andy shuffled in and out of boarding facilities. SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY PLEASE!! We do remember what it is like to be a horse-crazy kid, but we simply cannot entertain offers from anyone under 21. Only homes within a reasonable driving distance of Nashville, TN will be considered. Home visit required. SAFE transportation will be the responsibility of the adopter, unless arrangements are made for Almost Home to provide transport.
